Featured Actor of the Week: Jack Nicholson

This week's featured actor is one of my favorite actors of all time Jack Nicholson (1937-pres). I remember as a kid watching him as the joker in Batman. He has so many awards and great movies it's impossible to mention each and everyone of them. In my opinion no one gets into a character as well as Jack Nicholson. He has played the villain and the crazy guy, but he has also made funny films such as Anger Management and The Bucket List.

Jack Nicholson has been around forever and has been a joy to watch. Some of my favorite films he has been in include Anger Management (2003), Batman (1989), The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981), and As Good as it Gets (1997)

I believe one day a person my age will look at Jack Nicholson as one of the best actors of all time. The quality of films he has been in over such a long time just proves that he is. I believe the different types of roles shows his versatility. Just an actor that is enjoyable to watch.

Movie Review: Epic

Today I was able to make it out to go see the 20th Century Fox computer animated movie Epic. I thought that it was good, not one of the best children's movies I have seen but it was cute and had its funny moments as well. For a children's movie it was a very good cast with Amanda Seyfried as the main character name Mary Katherine or MK. Also, Josh Hutcherson from The Hunger Games, and Beyonce Knowles and Colin Farrell voices were in the film as well.

Again this movie wasn't bad just not one of my favorite kids movies. I do think there will be plenty of children that will like this movie and if you have kids its a good way to keep them quiet for a bit. The slug and the snail were very funny and I think they were the best characters. I also think the idea to make a story like this one was very creative.

Movie Review: Breakfast at Tiffany's

Tonight I decided to watch Breakfast at Tiffany's, I have always heard good things about it and I finally came around to watching it tonight. Afterwards I was glad I watched it. Audrey Hepburn's performance was great. I was a little surprised about the amount of funny moments were in it, and that Mickey Rooney was in it playing the Asian Landlord. Also, I have never seen a movie with George Peppard but I liked him and Buddy Edsen from The Beverly Hillbillies was a surprise as well.

Overall this was a enjoyable movie, for 1961 this was a very good romantic comedy movie. Along with a good cast this movie is a classic. I liked the quick lines that were funny and the little things that made it funny. The love story was good, and it was a cool setting being in New York.

Featured Actress of the Week: Judy Garland

This week's featured actress is someone who had a long career that was cut a little short. Though she had a long career Judy Garland (1922-1969) will always be best known for her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz when she was only 16 years old.

Judy Garland's career would start at an early age as she was a singer and dancer with her two older sisters on vaudeville. She would eventually be signed by MGM at the age of 13. Three years later she would get the part of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz in 1939. A part in which GMG tried to cast Shirley Temple but 20th Century Fox would decline to have MGM borrow her for the picture.

Later in her career Judy Garland would be nominated for many different awards for her Hollywood career as well as returning to stage. Her long 40 year career is looked at as a long versatile career. In many of her films she acted, sang, and danced. She left them world in a tragic way in 1969 of an apparent overdose. Even though she left too soon she left a mark on the stage and on camera. Her memory will live on as long as families sit down every year and watch her in The Wizard of Oz, which is a movie that I still enjoy to this day.

Top 5 Animated Disney Movies

It's that time of week again for my Top 5 list. This week I am going to give you my Top 5 Animated Disney Movies. I grew up with basically every single Disney movie, in the old VHS tapes. Even today I still enjoy watching animated films and love to go back and watch these. So here it is!

5. Finding Nemo (2003)

4. Toy Story (1995)

3. Beauty and The Beast (1991)

2. Aladdin (1992)

1. Lion King (1994)

These five are really just a few great movies that Disney has made. There are literally hundreds of great Disney films that families still enjoy watching together to this day. Again these are my Top 5, but I'm sure the list would vary from person to person.

Honorable Mention:

Little Mermaid (1989)
Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Cinderella (1950)
Bambi (1942)
Peter Pan (1953)

Movie Review: The Great Gatsby

Today I was able to go out and see The Great Gatsby. The beginning of the movie started good but then in my opinion the camera movements and shots started to hurt my eyes a little. About twenty minutes in though the film started to go smoothly and was very enjoyable after. The cast was very good Leonardo DiCaprio was the perfect Gatsby. I feel he had great chemistry with Tobey Maguire who played the part of Nick Carraway.

Overall this film was very good and I really enjoyed not knowing what was going to happen next. Joel Edgerton played Tom Buchanan also was perfectly cast, and Carey Mulligan did great as Daisy Buchanan. I don't recall Mulligan in any other films but she did great. I personally liked the 1920's New York style. However, one little complaint I have was there were parts where they played current music during a 1920's themed movie. I would have wanted music from the time period, there was some in parts. Some nice special effects throughout the movie.

Movie Review: Silver Linings Playbook

Last night I watched the movie Silver Linings Playbook. The movie was about two hours long and the first hour and twenty were a little slow but towards the end it picked up and ended up being an enjoyable film. Jennifer Lawrence had a great performance, I can see why she won an Oscar for it. Bradley Cooper also was very good but what I think made this film good was the supporting cast. Robert De Niro's character was very funny and often reminded me of myself when I cheer for one of my teams.

Overall I think another reason why this was a good movie was even though the plot is a very serious plot because he is a bipolar and she has her own problems. However the funny parts lighten up what could be too serious of a movie. I suggest people see this and see what they think.

First Featured Actor of the Week: Charlie Chaplin

My first featured actor of the week was a pioneer in the movie industry. Quite possibly the first mega star of cinema Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977).

In my opinion the entire movie industry owes thanks to Charlie Chaplin. One of the first to direct, act, and score his own films. This stage actor from London would be best know for his iconic character "The Tramp".

My favorite Chaplin film is The Kid (1921) which is a comedy that pulls on your heart strings a little as well. Basically in this film a woman (Edna Purviance) loses her child which is played by a young Jackie Coogan who would later play the part of Uncle Fester in the TV series The Addams Family. In this film Chaplin as the Tramp cares for the child and grows to love him as one of his own while people are trying to take him away. Here is a clip from The Kid

Finally one last thing I would encourage people to see is the biopic Chaplin made in 1992 staring Robert Downey Jr.. For people who are curious about Chaplin but not crazy about watching silent movies. Also Charlie Chaplin's daughter Geraldine plays his mother Hannah in the film. I would suggest you watch this film though very very good.
Charlie Chaplin's memory has and will continue to live on way after he left us in 1977. During his time comedy wasn't about punchlines but about the facial features and body language. Which in my opinion was the trait that made him so great. Hopefully this post will enhance someones curiosity and help keep his memory alive.

Summer 2013 Movies to See

With the summer coming in just a couple weeks it will be time again for the summer movie season. After a long day at the pool or the beach people will be filing into the theaters with their popcorn and soda. I am looking forward to seeing as many movies as I can, but there are a few movies I am interested in seeing.
The first movie I am excited to see is coming to theaters July 12th is Grown Ups 2. Adam Sandler and his group make this sequel of the summer hit from 2010. I am interested to see how this turns out as sometimes sequels do not live up to the first film. The second film returns Kevin James, Chris Rock, and David Spade but it appears Rob Schneider will not be in this one.
The second movie I am curious to see is The Lone Ranger which will be in theaters July 3rd. This film is made by the same creators of the successful Pirates of the Caribbean series. The main reason I want to see this movie is the fact that Johnny Depp is playing the role of Tonto.
Another interesting movie is the reuniting of the Wedding Crashers in the film The Internship which is in theaters June 7th. Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn play a couple of guys who's careers are going down the drain with the digital era taking over. So the two decide to intern for Google.
Finally a couple of kid movies I am interested in seeing are Epic (May 24th) and Monsters University (June 21st). Simply because they look like they will be fun to watch. Sometimes in my opinion it is nice to get away from the grown up movies to return to your childhood and watch a disney or animated film.  One last movie to possibly look at will be Man of Steel which comes out June 14th, another Superman movie with Henry Cavill as Clark Kent and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Can't forget that Russell Crowe is in this film as well.
So as you can see there is plenty to keep busy during the summer when it comes to the movie industry. My advice is to go out and get a good dinner, and go see these movies.
